Media: Apple will release an iPad Pro with an M2 chip in the fall

According to Mark Gurman's Apple Tracker newsletter, Apple plans to release the iPad Pro with the M2 chip between September and November of this year. Gurman expects Apple to release a major update for the next generation iPad Pro, which will presumably include support for MagSafe charging.

According to the expert, the last time Apple significantly updated the iPad Pro was in 2018. This update came about a year and a half after the release of iPad Pro 10.5 in 2017. In his opinion, Apple is going to update the model this year, since in April 2021 it released the most recent generation of iPad Pro with M1. A rumored launch date between September and November 2022 means that Apple will spend anywhere from one year and four months to a year and a half preparing the new model.

During Apple's "Peek Performance" event earlier this month, the company showed off its latest iPad Air, but didn't show off the updated iPad Pro model. The company also introduced another processor from its own line - M1 Ultra. It's essentially two M1 Max chips fused together using a chip technology that Apple calls UltraFusion. The M1 Ultra offers 128GB of graphics memory and has seven times as many transistors as the base M1 chip.

Gurman predicted last year that the iPad Pro would have wireless charging capability and a glass backing. A 9to5Mac report backs this up, but sources say Apple may have ditched the glass back design in favor of an aluminum one with a glass company logo.

Apple has also not yet confirmed the rumors regarding the M2 chip. Gurman believes that the chip's processor will be slightly faster than its predecessor and will have the same eight-core architecture. He also expects Apple to add the M2 to both the new iPad Pro and the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and 24-inch iMac rumored to launch later this year. Predictions for the M2 chip that will be used in the redesigned MacBook Air are mixed: Gurman says it will include the new chip, while Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks the MacBook will ship with the M1.
