World's longest air route from Hong Kong to New York to bypass Russia

Cathay Pacific plans to launch the world's longest air route from Hong Kong to New York, bypassing Russian airspace. Its length will be more than 16,600 km, and the flight time will be about 17 hours.

The Hong Kong airline will stop flying in Russian airspace on New York-Hong Kong flights. Cathay Pacific flights will fly from John F. Kennedy International Airport over the Atlantic Ocean, the UK, Europe, Turkey and Central Asia. The length of the route will be 16,618 km. The usual route, flying through the Arctic and over Russia, was 12,990 km and took about 15 hours.

The flights will be operated by Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. Cathay Pacific believes that due to seasonal tailwinds, a route over the Atlantic Ocean looks more favorable than a flight across the Pacific Ocean. In the meantime, the airline flies around Russia over the Pacific Ocean with an intermediate stop in Los Angeles. However, the new route will not require additional landing.

Up to this point, the longest route in the world was considered to be the Singapore Airlines route from Singapore to New York, which takes about 17.5 hours and is 15,349 km.

In response to the measures of the EU countries, neighboring states, the United States and Canada, the Russian Federation also closed its airspace. However, Hong Kong and China were not among them.

Earlier, the longest flight in the world was planned to be launched by the Australian Qantas Airways. Travel time from Sydney to London and New York was supposed to be about 20 hours. However, the start of flights was postponed due to the pandemic.
