Chinese Users Have Trouble Installing Ad Blocker in Firefox

A number of users in China have reported difficulties installing ad-blocking plugins in the Mozilla Firefox browser. When searching for these extensions using a Chinese IP address, an HTTP 451 error appears, accompanied by the message "This page is not available in your region."

Users of the global and Chinese versions of Firefox note that the problem with installing ad blockers occurs in mainland China.

When looking for the AdBlock, AdGuard, AdNauseam and uBlock Origin extensions for Firefox, Chinese users encounter HTTP 451 error.

According to the Landian resource, difficulties with installing and finding ad blockers are likely due to legal problems. Mozilla was sued by a number of Chinese companies between 2016 and 2018.

The plaintiffs in these cases were Hunan Happy Sunshine Media Company, Kuliu.com Beijing Information Technology, Mango TV and Shanda's subsidiary Ku6 Media. Mozilla was able to block pre-advertising for these companies after installing extensions, damaging them.

Despite the fact that these organizations went to court more than four years ago, it is not known why the restriction of access to plugins has come just now.

At the end of last year, Mozilla released a 2021 report showing that Firefox users around the world installed various browser plug-ins approximately 127 million times during that period. The most popular extension was AdBlock Plus (over 6 million installs), followed by uBlock Origin (over 5 million).

Analysts believe that by the end of 2022, uBlock Origin will overtake AdBlock Plus in terms of popularity. Also popular with users were Mozilla Facebook (1.74 million) and Ghostery (1.16 million).

Firefox add-ons were most requested by users from China, the US, Germany, France, and Russia.
