Ubisoft unveils ZooBuilder, an AI tool for creating animal animations

French game developer Ubisoft announced the creation of a new 3D animal animation tool using artificial intelligence (AI) back in 2020. Then the company’s division in China began working on it. After the development was transferred to the Canadian branch of the studio, which is engaged in the creation of prototypes based on the latest scientific research.

The biggest problem in working with the creation of different fauna models is the inability to immediately obtain data about the animal, especially if motion capture is required using sensors. So Ubisoft is building a tool that analyzes uploaded animal data and videos. ZooBuilder can parse any video with animals frame, after which developers get a ready-made animated skeleton with which they can continue to work.

Now the tool is in the prototype stage and is not used in the current projects of the company, but it performs a number of useful tasks. According to Ubisoft, this does not mean that many animators will lose their jobs. The tool will simplify their task and give them the opportunity to diversify projects. Therefore, when this development from the prototype goes into a full-fledged launch, users will have to expect a large set of outposts and juggernauts surrounded by diverse flora and fauna in an open world.
