Asana: employees spend more than half of their working day planning and communicating with colleagues

According to a survey conducted by business software maker Asana, company employees spend more than half of their working day on “work coordination” — keeping track of cases, searching for information and communicating.

More than 10.6 thousand knowledge workers (data analysts, graphic designers, etc.) participated in the survey. It found that since 2019, the amount of time spent strategizing or planning has dropped from 13% to 9%.

On average, in the world, employees spend about a third of their working time on their main tasks. Data may vary slightly by region. Germans devote more time to real work than others, but spend the least time on strategic planning. while workers in Japan and Singapore spend 10% of their time on strategy, but those two countries also spend the most time coordinating work.

“The workday has become so complex that we have to spend more time just managing the process and the many competing priorities than actually getting the job done,” says Melissa Swift, transformational solutions consultant at Mercer. According to her, companies have tried to reduce the time spent on approval, but so far without much success.

Asana attributes this to the difficulty of consolidating remote and often asynchronous commands at the same time. In addition, many companies have faced difficulties in the field of long-term forecasting against the backdrop of the pandemic. “The downturn in strategic work has been astounding,” says Asana COO Ann Raimondi.

According to the online scheduler Reclaim.ai, the number of meetings during the pandemic increased by 70%. The average meeting length is 50.6 minutes, and managers spend an average of 21.5 hours per week in meetings.

In October 2021, Rabota.ru and AliExpress Russia conducted a study and found that 53% of Russians are distracted during work, and 47% assured that they are focused on their work obligations. 10% of respondents spend their working time on online learning, 5% on watching videos and movies, and 4% on games and shopping.
