According to TASS with reference to the mobile operator Yota, in Russia from January 2022 to the beginning of April, the number of users of VPN services increased by 53.5 times. The most popular VPN apps were also named.

The mobile operator Yota traced how the Internet traffic of customers spent on VPN services changed from January 1 to April 3, 2022. In total, from January to April, the share of those who use VPN increased 38 times and amounted to 22.8% of the total number of Yota customers. By the beginning of April, there were 53.5 times more users of such applications than in January.

A noticeable increase in the number of VPN users began in February. From March 21 to March 27, the share of traffic to VPN applications increased nine times and amounted to 2.6% of the total. In the last week of March, Yota customers spent 69 times more traffic on VPN services than in the first week of January.

OpenVPN became the leader among VPN services for Yota customers - for the week from March 28 to April 3, the share of traffic was 55.9%. In second place was WireGuard (32,085), followed by Surfshark VPN (6.04%). The top five is closed by iCloud Private Relay and Touch VPN with traffic shares of 3.52% and 0.95%, respectively.

From January to April, Surfshark VPN traffic grew 75.6 times, the number of users - 172 times. WireGuard traffic grew 27 times, the number of users - 13.8 times. Also, ExpressVPN was among the leaders in terms of traffic growth — its indicators for three months grew by 10.2 times, the number of users also increased by 3.4 times
