Windows Server now supports automatic installation of .NET updates

Microsoft has stated that Windows administrators can now choose to have automatic updates for .NET Framework and .NET Core through Microsoft Update (MU) on Windows Server systems.

The new variant began to be deployed on 12 April. Administrators can add .NET Core 3.1, .NET 5.0, and .NET 6.0 to the Automatic Updates channel as a third option on top of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and the Update Center catalog.

“We are pleased to announce that starting in April 2022, we will be releasing monthly updates for modern .NET (.NET Core) for server operating systems through Microsoft Update (MU) on a subscription basis,” explained Jamshed Damkewala, Principal Technical Manager at . NET at Microsoft.

According to him, if the administrator does not want the servers to be updated automatically, then no action is required from him. There are also no changes expected for client operating systems, which will continue to receive updates automatically via WSUS and the MU catalog as before.

An option was added for customers who need a way to install .NET updates without using a deployment tool. Administrators will be able to choose their preferred method of keeping server operating systems up to date based on their deployment approach.

You can subscribe to automatic .NET updates in Windows Serve by setting the registry keys listed in the table below (either manually or through Group Policy).

In December 2020, at the request of customers, Microsoft first began providing .NET and .NET Core updates for Windows through the Update Center (through the WSUS catalog and MU for server OSes and automatic updates for client OSes).

In early April 2022, the company reminded customers that multiple versions of the .NET Framework (i.e. 4.5.2, 4.6, and 4.6.1) signed using the insecure Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1) will stop working at the end of the month .

In July 2022, we plan to roll out a new Windows Autopatch service that will automatically update Windows and Office software for Microsoft customers with a Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 or higher license.
