Russian banks are winding down networks, creating problems for customers

As part of the optimization, Russian banks have accelerated the winding down of their branch networks, as reported by Kommersant, citing data from the Central Bank.

The leader was Sberbank, which closed 70 branches in May alone, and since the beginning of the year - 159 branches. All other banks together closed 67 offices in May, with 511 closed since the beginning of the year. There are now 25.2 thousand bank branches in Russia, of which Sberbank owns 13.1 thousand.

Sberbank said that “the coverage of territories with offices remains at the same level,” while most customers use the mobile application — the bank has more than 100 million customers in total.

As the source writes, the withdrawal of banks from the regions turns into problems for the client. Clients whose deposits are about to expire can use the affiliate network of ATMs to withdraw deposits or transfer money by bank details or mobile phone via SBP within preferential limits. However, the amount of deposits may not fit into the limits of both ATMs and SBP (100 thousand rubles per month). According to the Deposit Insurance Agency, in the first quarter of 2022, the average deposit per person amounted to 284 thousand rubles.

According to the recommendations of the Central Bank, the bank should warn customers in advance about the closure of the office and enable customers with limited mobility to receive the usual services.
