RCC Progress decided to patent the Earth remote sensing system

The Progress Rocket and Space Center (part of the Roskosmos Group of Companies) has decided to patent an Earth remote sensing system capable of observing in the optical and infrared ranges. The corresponding document was distributed by the Federal Institute of Industrial Property.

The application states that the system is a rocket and space system for highly detailed remote sensing of the Earth in the visible and (or) infrared range of observation. It also talks about the inclusion in the system of both the launch vehicle and the observation spacecraft. It is assumed that the satellite will be able to turn in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the orbit.

“The maximum transverse dimension of the spacecraft (SC) does not exceed 0.6 of the diameter D of the payload zone of the launch vehicle, the maximum height of the SC does not exceed D, the size of the aperture of optoelectronic equipment d can be in the range from 0.11 D to 0.25 D” says the patent application.

At the moment, the Aist-2D satellite, created by the Progress Rocket and Space Center (RCC Progress), is operating in orbit. Its cameras are normally aimed at the Earth, because the device is used for remote sensing of the planet. For filming other celestial bodies, the apparatus is reoriented. The change in orientation made it possible to monitor from space the uncontrolled deorbit of the second stage of the Long March-5B (Changzheng-5B) launch vehicle. Now RCC "Progress" is creating a new satellite "Aist-2T" for stereoscopic imaging of the Earth. This will be the first vehicle launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome on the Angara.
