Amazon launches small electronics recycling program

The American company Amazon has launched a recycling program for old mobile devices. The owners of old technology will not receive any reward for the transfer of their gadgets, except for the satisfaction of contributing to environmental protection.

The company's recycling program allows you to ship small electronics free of charge from any UPS pick-up point, but customers must pay the cost of packaging. Amazon then donates the devices to licensed recycling facilities. The company promises that in the process, contractors will remove and destroy any identifying marks and personal information. However, Amazon recommends factory resetting devices before handing them over if they are functional.

Amazon's recycling program is not new and has been around for years, says company spokesman Sage Kolpak. Amazon has now relaunched the new page to make it easier for customers to find the program, he said. It should not be confused with Amazon's trade-in program, which provides the company with a gift card for sending gadgets.

The recycling program only applies to small electronics. The list of accepted devices is presented at the link. The list includes e-readers, keyboards, mice, gaming consoles, device cases, mobile phones, fitness bands, smart home appliances, and more. In particular, we are talking about gadgets that fit in a small box or envelope. The program will not ship electronics with swollen or leaking batteries.

Amazon and German marketplace Zalando have taken part in a project to recycle and reuse textiles in Europe, which was launched by the non-profit organization Accelerating Circularity. As part of the campaign, participants will demonstrate the intention of manufacturers to improve the processing of textile waste and reduce the burning of polyester fibers, which is dangerous to the environment. Previously, Amazon was accused of burning unsold goods in a warehouse in the UK.

According to a report by the non-profit organization Oceana, Amazon generated about 317 million kg of plastic packaging waste in 2020, up 29% from 2019. The company declares that it is reducing the use of additional packaging and switching to envelopes for groups of goods, where possible. Amazon promises that all device packaging will be recyclable by 2023.
