Toyota offers to repurchase bZ4X electric vehicles recalled due to problems with loose wheel bolts

Toyota is offering to buy bZ4X electric vehicles from the owners, recalled due to a serious design flaw - a problem with loosening and unscrewing during the movement of the car's wheel hub bolts. The manufacturer has found that this process is slow due to repeated sharp turns and hard braking, and during assembly and testing, Toyota engineers were unable to fix this problem.

The manufacturer at the end of June launched a recall program for its first mass-produced electric vehicles due to a defect. Then it was assumed that almost three thousand Toyota bZ4X around the world would be finalized at the company's service centers as part of warranty repairs and returned to their owners. Moreover, the Japanese manufacturer advised the owners of the bZ4X not to drive themselves and bring the car on a tow truck to the nearest dealership for storage until the necessary replacement parts are delivered there. Now this situation has been aggravated in two months by the fact that the repair period is constantly being postponed by the manufacturer.

In August, Toyota expanded the list of incentive options for this revocable company for customers. In addition to issuing a replacement car (and Toyota promised to reimburse the fuel costs incurred by the client while operating the loaned car with a gasoline engine) for the waiting period and the bZ4X repair period, which has not yet begun, the manufacturer promised to pay compensation to customers in the amount of $ 5 thousand, provide an extended warranty and give customers access to free charging at EVgo stations until the end of 2024. If such measures are not satisfied with electric car buyers, then Toyota offered to buy all bZ4X from them for $42,000 or more, depending on the configuration. The representative of the company explained that the final cost of the buyback will be determined by the condition of the car. Toyota will not compensate customers for mark-ups from car dealers if they buy back an electric car.

Experts believe that Toyota took such a step with an offer to buy out faulty cars for the reason that it cannot quickly solve this problem. In addition, Subaru Solterra electric vehicles were also subject to a recall for the same malfunction. This model is built on the same platform as the bZ4X.
