The United States suspends the operation of all tiltrotor CV-22 Osprey - the American hybrid of an airplane and a helicopter turned out to be unreliable and even dangerous

The US military is suspending all of its CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft deployed around the world. This was reported by the agency Kyodo.

According to the source of the agency, the reason for this decision was a series of incidents with convertiplanes. It is emphasized that this will also affect machines located in Japan.

The US military in October 2018 deployed five of its CV-22 Ospreys at the Yokota Air Force Base, which is located within the Tokyo prefecture. By 2024, a total of ten such devices were to be deployed there. Prior to this, 24 more Ospreys were stationed on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa, where they are used by the US Marine Corps. The Japan Self-Defense Forces also purchased several of these machines from the United States, in total, Japan planned to purchase 17 Osprey convertiplanes.

Over the years of operation, many incidents have been recorded with American convertiplanes. In particular, in 2012, two cars crashed in Florida and Morocco; in 2016, the incident occurred in the Persian Gulf zone: then a marine was killed. In August 2017, a tiltrotor crashed off the east coast of Australia. Numerous minor accidents with the CV-22 Osprey regularly occurred in Japan, which caused serious concern among the local population.
