Russia - Optimistic forecast: Moskvich expects recovery of the Russian car market

Moskvich CEO Dmitry Pronin said that today the demand for cars is 50% lower than in 2021. Therefore, he "Moskvich" predicts a drop in sales of passenger cars in Russia in 2022 by 50% - up to 770 thousand units.

According to him, the Russian car market will gradually recover. By 2024, it can reach 1.33 million units, and by 2026 - 1.69 million cars.

According to the forecast of Avtostat, sales of new passenger cars in Russia this year may fall by 60% compared to 2021, amounting to 600 thousand units. But in a more optimistic scenario, sales could reach 690 thousand units, which would correspond to a 54% drop. In the worst case scenario, the drop will be 67% to 505 thousand cars.

As for the market recovery, we can expect it to start this fall and it will be protracted. But at the same time, the market is unlikely to return to the pre-Covid level of 1.5 million units, since for this it is necessary that prices “roll back” to the previous level, and this most likely will not happen.

In 2024-2025, Avtostat is expected to sell at the level of 1.2-1.3 million units.
