First built-in 4K HDR 9.2MP laptop camera introduced

OmniVision Group has announced that it will be the first to ship 4K HDR camera modules for laptops. The OV08X is the industry's only 0.7µm 9.2MP image sensor that can be used for the next generation of thinner and lighter notebooks.

According to the official statement, OV08X can be used in laptops equipped with 16:10 aspect ratio displays with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The vertical size of the sensor is only 4 mm.

“Users no longer need to rely on external webcams for high-quality video calls. The OV08X image sensor enables designers of high-end and flagship laptops to use high-definition 4K cameras to create the thinnest devices,” said Akim Chen, Product Specialist at OmniVision Group.

The OV08X image sensor supports auto-framing, keeping the user centered on the screen during video calls, and the field of view is adjustable. The sensor also supports human presence detection and provides contactless login and auto-lock. The sensor has a built-in low power image signal processor that provides light sensitive mode and ultra low power consumption to maximize battery life.

The sensor is based on OMNIVISION PureCel Plus-S composite crystal technology and supports 4K at 30 fps. The sensor will be put into mass production in December 2022.
