Scientists have found out what genetic mechanism leads to obesity

Scientists have discovered a new genetic mechanism that is associated with obesity. An article about this was published in the journal Advanced Science.

According to the study, microRNAs, small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate the expression of certain genes, play a leading role in obesity. A team of scientists from the University of Barcelona found that they can also prevent the growth of adipose tissue associated with obesity.

A decrease in the expression of a specific microRNA cluster (miR-424 (322) / 503) leads to an increase in the expression of the SNCG gene, which contributes to an increase in fat deposits. In addition, the researchers note that obese people show lower expression of this microRNA, and when they lose weight, its expression returns to normal. In particular, in experiments on mice, the removal of miR-424 (322) / 503 led to obesity.

"The observed re-expression of this RNA cluster with weight loss shows that it is a dynamic and reversible pathway, so we could learn to use it as a new treatment for obesity," said Ruth Rodriguez-Barrueco, one of the study's authors.

Previously, scientists found that using a smartphone four times reduces the time a mother interacts with her baby.
