Microsoft has banned cryptocurrency mining in its cloud and online services without the permission of the company

Microsoft has changed the Universal License Terms for Online Services to include a ban on mining on any of its cloud services without the company's approval. The restrictions also apply to Microsoft Azure.

The updates went into effect on December 1, 2022. They will apply to all new cloud and online service licenses. Licenses already purchased will be subject to new rules upon renewal, however the company recommends that you seek written approval to use Microsoft Online Services for cryptocurrency mining, regardless of the subscription term.

“Neither the client, nor those accessing the web service through the client, may use the web service to mine cryptocurrency without the prior written permission of Microsoft,” the rules state.

Microsoft explains the changes made by the fact that “cryptocurrency mining can lead to failures or deterioration of online services. It can also be associated with cyber fraud and unauthorized access to and use of customer resources.”
