In England, developers are required to provide gigabit Internet to all new homes

At the beginning of 2023, the UK Department for Digitalization, Culture, Media and Sports announced the adoption of amendments to building codes that oblige developers to provide new buildings with infrastructure for connecting residents to gigabit Internet.

The authorities expect that due to the amendments, "millions of the country's inhabitants" will be able to access broadband network connection. As Minister of Digital Infrastructure Julia Lopez noted, now citizens will be able to do this, despite any attempts by developers to save money.

It is likely that property built in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be excluded from the rules of the new legislation in connection with building codes independent of England.

The UK authorities have also passed an amendment allowing Internet providers to seek permission from the land owner or landlord to upgrade the infrastructure in already built houses through the courts. Such a request can be sent if the owner of the territory does not respond to the subscriber's requests for more than 35 days.

The new law was passed on December 26, 2022, after a 12-month technical consultation, which showed that about 12% of the 171,000 new homes built in England did not have gigabit broadband access when completed. DCMS claims that gigabit broadband is currently available in more than 72% of UK households. By 2030, the department aims to roll out gigabit infrastructure across the country.
