Media: Meta shareholders are tired of scandals and want control

Meta's shareholder group, together with the non-profit organization Campaign for Accountability, requested an independent review of the company's public interest and safety risk oversight committee. Shareholders question the board's ability to provide security on Meta's platforms.

Two shareholders - Harrington Investments and the Park Foundation, which funds civil society, media and environmental initiatives - sent a letter to Meta's corporate secretary.

"Shareholders are asking the board of directors for an independent assessment of the effectiveness of the Committee for Audit and Oversight of the Company's Risks in the Field of Public Interest and Security, and also ask to provide oversight of strategic risks on these issues from the entire board," - stated in the document, which will be considered at the annual meeting of shareholders.

This is not the first time Meta / Facebook has faced demands for tighter security controls on their platforms. In 2018, shareholders were asked to create a separate committee that would focus on risks, including incitement to violence and more. This decision was not made, but Facebook expanded the role of the audit committee to include oversight of risk. However, shareholders argue that the board was unable to resolve the underlying issues.

In October, ex-Facebook employee Frances Haugen provided the media with company documents, which indicated that Facebook management was aware of the platform's main problems related to the spread of disinformation, conspiracy theories and incitement to violence; in addition, the moderation on Facebook was softer in relation to popular users and politicians. Haugen's documents also made it clear that the social network removes less than 5% of hate speech, and not 94%, as previously stated by the head of the company Mark Zuckerberg. The lack of moderators has also led to the proliferation of terrorism-supporting content. Mark Zuckerberg called the charges libel.
