In 2023, more than 80% of new cars sold in Norway were electric

In 2023, 82.4% of cars sold in Norway were electric, according to the Norwegian Road Federation. In the previous year this value was 79.3%. Tesla led car sales for the third year in a row, despite the ongoing conflict between the American manufacturer and trade unions in Nordic countries.

Almost five out of six new cars sold in Norway in 2023 were fully electric. Tesla's market share in the country increased from 12.2% to 20.0%.

The Scandinavian country plans to limit the sale of gasoline and diesel cars by 2025, while simultaneously exempting owners of all-electric vehicles from paying a number of taxes. Norwegian authorities have already introduced some taxes for cars with internal combustion engines in 2023.

Tesla refuses to accept the demands of Swedish repair centers, which are seeking a collective agreement with the manufacturer. As a result, Swedish dockers, truck drivers, postal workers, electricians, cleaners and other workers refused to service Tesla and enlisted the support of unions in Norway, Denmark and Finland, which are helping to block the import of the American company's products into Sweden.

However, these circumstances did not harm Tesla sales in Norway, said the head of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, Christina Boo. In her opinion, the share of electric vehicles in the country’s market will reach 95% in 2024. From 2021 to 2022, the number of electric vehicles in the country increased by 15%, Bu noted.

Toyota and Volkswagen occupied 12.4% and 10.8% of the Norwegian market versus 8% and 11.6% a year earlier. The best-selling electric car in the Nordic country is Tesla Model Y - 18.2%. Next come the ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq with 5.2% and 4.5%.

Norway's largest car retailer Moller Mobility Group predicts that electric vehicles will take up 90% of the market in 2024.

Despite the massive transition to electric vehicles, Norwegian electric vehicle owners complain of a lack of street charging stations.
