In February, VKontakte will update its approach to content moderation for communities: the social network will introduce a flexible strike system. Administrators will be able to see the reason for the removal of controversial content and will be able to take the necessary measures to avoid restrictions in the future.
The strike system consists of warnings and restrictions of various levels: from publication limits to blocking for different periods. The community receives a strike if it violates the rules of the platform. The more violations, the more serious the restrictive measures.
The approach will become simpler and clearer for authors and will help avoid the application of harsh measures, such as complete blocking, to communities that receive a one-time warning. At the same time, it does not cancel instant blocks for serious violations and publication of dangerous content - the measures here remain the same.
The system will consist of six levels and provide a flexible list of measures depending on the number of strikes. For example, for the first violations, restrictions will be imposed for several hours; for subsequent violations, the period and number of restrictions will increase. Measures that may be applied will include bans on the publication of materials, exclusion from searches and recommendations, and disabling monetization. At some levels with a large number of strikes, the community may be blocked for a certain period.
A special section will appear in the community control panel where you can see the strikes received by the community. They will be reset after a year from the date of receipt. A potentially incorrectly assigned strike can be appealed and removed if the support request is reviewed positively.
