“The solution is obvious: make the battery replaceable”

Fairphone has decided to respond to OnePlus' statements about the pointlessness of very long smartphone support in terms of software updates.

Fairphone co-founder Miquel Ballester expressed the company's position, which, of course, does not coincide with the position of OnePlus.

As the makers of the Fairphone 2, the longest-lasting Android device to date, and the still-fresh Fairphone 5, which offers eight years of guaranteed software support and is aiming for ten years, we wholeheartedly agree that a device's unrepairable, glued-together body is no excuse for mediocre software support commitments.

It's time for the industry as a whole to adopt a more repairable design for its devices.

For Mr. Liu [President of OnePlus] and anyone else concerned that their phone's battery won't last long, the solution should be obvious: make it replaceable

Let us remind you that Fairphone promotes its smartphones from the position of maximum durability. This applies to a simple design, high maintainability, sale of all necessary spare parts and, at the same time, maximum support through software updates. For example, the Fairphone 2 received Android updates for five years, the Fairphone 3/3+ from 2019 will likely receive them until 2026, and for its new Fairphone 5 the company promises five years of Android updates and eight years of security updates, but adds, that it will try to extend these periods to eight and ten years, respectively.
