Scientists from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI have registered a rare natural phenomenon - an abnormally sharp increase in the muon flux of cosmic rays that appeared as a result of a powerful solar flare. This was reported by the TASS news agency with reference to the MEPhI press service.
As the press service emphasized, Russian scientists were the first in the world to report the registration of this phenomenon. An increase in the counting rate of cosmic ray muons was noticed on March 23, 2024 at about 01:40 a.m. universal time (04:40 Moscow time). Scientists observed the maximum increase in the muon flux from 01:39 to 01:44.
A phenomenon called GLE occurs as a result of powerful flares on the Sun and is very rare - since 1942, scientists have recorded 73 cases. According to MEPhI, GLE-74 is a consequence of a solar flare of class X1.1, which occurred at 01:33.
