Apple sues former employee for leaking information about Vision Pro headset and Journal app

Apple has sued former employee Andrew Ode, accusing him of violating the company's confidentiality agreement and labor laws. The corporation claims that he leaked classified information related to the Vision Pro mixed reality headset and the Journal app to the media and employees of other technology companies.

Od's former employer is seeking a jury trial and damages in excess of $25,000. Od joined the company as an iOS software engineer in 2016. According to court documents, Aude worked to optimize battery performance with access to information on "dozens of Apple's most important projects."

The company claims that over the course of five years, Aude used his work iPhone to transmit information that included product development policies, compliance strategies, employee numbers and more.

In April 2023, Aude sent a list of completed features for the Journal iPhone app to a Wall Street Journal journalist. That same month, Aaron Tilley of the WSJ published an article about the iPhone's expanding healthcare capabilities.

Od used Signal to transmit more than 1.4 thousand messages to the journalist. In addition, a former Apple employee was accused of sending more than 10 thousand text messages to an Information journalist.

Apple views Od's actions as broad and targeted. The former employee tried to harm the products and functions with which he worked, the company is confident. They added that Oda's actions led to the appearance of at least five articles that included confidential and proprietary information from Apple. The leaks prevented the company from "surprising and delighting" with its newest products, the plaintiffs said.

Apple learned of Odom's disclosure late last year. In December of that year, the company fired him for misconduct. Apple tried to resolve the problem out of court, but Od refused to cooperate.
