MegaFon provided underwater communications for employees of the Nizhny Novgorod hydroelectric power station

MegaFon engineers completed a project to install telecom equipment at the Nizhny Novgorod hydroelectric power station, located on the Volga. For the first time, a reliable voice signal and high-speed mobile Internet became available to employees of a hydroelectric power station in premises that are under water, the company said.

The large-scale structure is located in the city of Zavolzhye, Nizhny Novgorod region. The hydroelectric power station was built in the mid-twentieth century and modernized several times. It currently has an installed capacity of 530.5 MW. Inside the concrete dam there are numerous turbines, hydraulic units and technical rooms. Many mechanisms and structures are located 30 m below the water level in the Volga, which corresponds to 50 m below the level of the world ocean.

All equipment located in the dam is serviced by more than 100 employees around the clock. If it is necessary to perform additional tasks, the number of workers increases to 1.5 thousand or more. Now HPP workers will be able to always stay in touch, quickly transmit the necessary information, exchange data with each other, and promptly report emergency situations.

Work on installing telecom equipment in underwater premises took several months. During this time, MegaFon engineers installed more than a dozen radio frequency modules, laid thousands of meters of optical and electrical cables, and installed about a hundred antennas in various places at the hydroelectric power station to ensure a reliable signal indoors.

The Nizhny Novgorod hydroelectric power station became the first in the country to implement such a project.
