ADATA and Samsung to Release First NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSDs

There are only a couple of weeks left before the start of the annual CES 2022 exhibition, and the upcoming announcements of the event participants are already leaking to the Internet. In this post, we'll talk about the upcoming releases of new NVMe drives from ADATA and Samsung that will run on PCIe 5.0 and demonstrate impressive potential in terms of data transfer rates.

XPG Nighthawk and XPG Blackbird by ADATA

While CES 2022 threatens to be another virtual event as several major manufacturers have already pulled out of in-person attendance (due to concerns about the spread of a new strain of coronavirus). ADATA representatives are planning to come to Las Vegas with their new XPG products. These include Project Nighthawk and Project Blackbird, two prototype M.2 PCIe 5.0 SSDs that offer capacities up to 8TB and nearly double the read / write performance of the current generation of PCIe 4.0 solutions.

And now a little more detail. The flagship drive Project Nighthawk is based on the Silicon Motion SM2508 controller, and according to ADATA engineers, it delivers sequential read speed at 14 GB / s and write at 12 GB / s. The slower Project Blackbird with an InnoGrit IG5666 controller achieves the same read performance, but the write speed is limited to 10 GB / s. The rest of the technical characteristics have not yet been disclosed, as well as the cost of the new drives. However ... we will find out all this information very soon.

Samsung PM1743

Samsung, which has also expressed a desire to participate in CES 2022, will also bring a new generation solution with the PM1743 index to the NVMe exhibition. This PCIe 5.0 SSD uses Gen 6 V-NAND and a native controller to deliver sequential reads up to 13GB / s (2,500,000 random read IOPS) and writes up to 6.6GB / s (250,000 IOPS at random write).

Samsung says the PM1743 delivers speeds of up to 608 MB / s per watt, which is 30% more energy efficient than current generation SSDs. The upcoming SSD will be offered in server-tier 2.5- and 3-inch EDSFF (E3.S) versions with storage capacities ranging from 1.92 TB to 15.36 TB. Samsung is currently testing the new device with server and server board chipset manufacturers. And the start of mass production is expected in the first quarter of 2022.
