Apple cuts production of Vision Pro amid falling sales

Apple has reduced sales plans for Vision Pro mixed reality headsets in 2024 to 400-450 thousand devices, writes analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. When the market consensus is 700-800 thousand gadgets, the expert explained.

Kuo notes that Apple has reduced production of the Vision Pro before launching sales outside the US. This means that the company is faced with a drop in demand for the $3.5 thousand headset in the United States.

Apple is reviewing and adjusting the Vision Pro development plan, so the release of a new headset model next year may not take place, Kuo notes. Analysts predicted the release of the next iteration of the device in the period from the second to the fourth quarter of 2025.

Apple now expects Vision Pro shipments to decline year-on-year in 2025.

With Vision Pro, Apple must address the lack of key apps, price and convenience, Kuo says.

Investors expected the pancake lenses used in the Vision Pro to drive growth in the optical sector. However, low supply of Apple's headset will reduce the technology's contribution to the optical industry for the foreseeable future, Kuo shared.

This will also affect the distribution and application of microOLED. The timing of mass production and introduction of microOLED and other small-sized consumer electronics devices will be delayed, the analyst predicts.

Earlier, Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman spoke about the drop in demand for Vision Pro. He attributes the decline in sales to the lack of interesting applications for the headset. If previously the Apple Store sold an average of two Vision Pros per day, now sales have dropped to several units per week. The headset was released in February of this year.
