Scientists have found a new biomarker of cardiovascular disease in men

Globulin binding sex hormones (SHBG) is associated with the risks of cardiovascular disease in men, experts from the University of Western Australia have found. They talked about this in an article in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Researchers analyzed the relationship between serum total testosterone and SHBG levels with cardiovascular disease in nearly 211,000 men aged 40-69 years. On average, over nine years of observation, problems with the heart and blood vessels developed in 4.2% of them.

Lower testosterone concentrations were not associated with myocardial infarction, strokes, heart failure, and other major cardiovascular diseases. Men with lower free testosterone had a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. At the same time, decreased SHBG was associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction, but a decrease in the likelihood of ischemic stroke and heart failure.

The reasons for the connection between SHBG and the risks of certain cardiovascular diseases have yet to be studied in more detail. But, apparently, this indicator can be used as a separate biomarker to assess the state of the cardiovascular system of men.
