TrendForce Analysts Count How Many Mini-LED Backlit Monitors Launched This Year

As you know, the parameters of screens on liquid crystal panels are largely determined by the backlight modules. Recently, the technology of modules based on miniature LEDs (sizes from 75 to 500 microns) or mini-LEDs provides an advantage over monitors with conventional panels due to local dimming, which allows improving image quality, in particular, obtaining higher brightness and contrast. However, the supplies of such monitors are still small, since they are limited by the high cost of mini-LED modules.

Analysts at TrendForce, an analyst company, studied the market situation and concluded that over the past year, the average price of mini-LED monitors has dropped from $ 5,000 to $ 2,300. At the same time, it remained many times higher than the price of a conventional monitor. More specifically, a 31.5-inch mini-LED backlit monitor now costs about 4 to 8 times the price of a conventional LED backlit model of the same size. Unsurprisingly, only 51,000 mini-LED monitors were produced in 2021. For 2022, analysts predict shipments of 65,000 units, an increase of 27%.

The main supplier of mini-LED backlit monitors is Samsung, an esports-focused company with 58% market share. In second place with 29% is Dell, which focuses on professional content creators. Asus, like Samsung, which positions mini-LED monitors as gaming equipment, is in third place with 12% of the market. Note that there are currently only three sizes on the market: 49 ", 31.5" and 27 ". Moreover, Samsung has one 49-inch model, Dell and ASUS have 31.5-inch models. Monitors with 27 "screens occupy only 3% of the market.
