Pirate streaming service Popcorn Time announces closure

According to TorrentFreak, the pirate streaming service Popcorn Time has announced its closure. The project team explained that this was done due to low popularity, especially in the last year.

Popcorn Time appeared in 2014. The illegal streaming platform, which allowed users to use torrents to watch movies online without downloading them, closed several times and changed developers. Its fork was released in Russian almost immediately. In 2016, in addition to a BitTorrent client with a media player, the service became available as a browser plugin and received support from the Pirate Bay. Popcorn Time Online is currently not available either.

Judging by the statement of the project team, now the history of the official development of Popcorn Time is finally over. Forks of the service, including its "adult" variants (Porn Time), are still working. The official Popcorn Time repository is also available on GitHub, despite the fact that the associated PopcornTime.app domain has been down for almost a year.

The developers of the service have always emphasized that the use of Popcorn Time is piracy, and users can use it only at their own peril and risk, and they may have to face the real consequences of its use in some countries.

According to TorrentFreak, this was due to the fact that in fact Neflix in many countries won the fight against Popcorn Time, both through legislation and by providing users with legal entertainment content for an affordable price.

Popcorn Time introduced a kids mode in 2020 to expand its audience. In the spring of that year, GitHub blocked the Popcorn Time repository at the request of the Film Companies Association under the Digital Rights Act. After a while, Popcorn Time objected to the block, and GitHub returned access to the closed repository.
