Linux 5.16 released with support for Intel Alder Lake S and AMX, AMD Rembrandt, Raspberry Pi CM 4 and Apple Magic Keyboard 2021

On January 9, 2022, Linus Torvalds presented the first stable release of the Linux 5.16 kernel. The release of the new Linux kernel came on schedule, two months after the previous stable Linux 5.15 release at the end of October last year.

The Linux 5.16 kernel contains 15,415 patches from 2,105 developers. The patch size is 45 MB. In fact, 12,023 files were affected by the kernel changes, 685,198 lines of code were added and 263,867 lines of code were removed. Most of the changes are related to device drivers. This kernel version has 22.5 million lines of code.

The new Linux kernel contains a large number of changes and updates, including support for Intel Alder Lake S and Raptor Lake, Intel AMX and Intel PXP, AMD Rembrandt (Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors), Switch Pro and Joy-Cons controllers for Nintendo Switch, and Apple Magic Keyboard 2021.

Linux 5.16 adds support for Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 and other Arm devices and boards. The new kernel brings initial support for Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio, DisplayPort 2.0 specification, and DisplayPort tunneling over USB4 for AMD GPUs.

In addition, the experts found that the new version of the Linux kernel optimized and improved support for various AMD APU models - their graphics performance in Linux 5.16 has increased.
