Toyota tops the U.S. auto market for the first time ever

According to Interfax, the Japanese automaker Toyota in 2021 for the first time in history took first place in terms of sales in the US market. At the same time, General Motors has been the undisputed leader since 1931.

Toyota has boosted sales in the United States over the past year by about 10% to 2.3 million vehicles. Meanwhile, General Motors sales were down nearly 13% to 2.2 million vehicles. The most popular Toyota model in the American market is the RAV4 crossover, with sales of 430.4 thousand units. General Motors' bestseller was the Chevrolet Silverado pickup with sales of 380,700 units.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Toyota was the first to bet on the recovery in demand for cars in the United States, and also managed to create stocks of microcircuits in time. Recall that last year the car industry was covered by a severe shortage of microcircuits.

At the same time, Toyota's management does not expect to retain its leadership in the American market in the long term, nor does it set itself such ambitious goals.

According to J.D. Power, last year about 15 million cars were sold in the United States, which was slightly more than in 2020, but significantly less than the 17 million cars that were sold on average in the five years before.
