India is considering creating its own mobile OS as an alternative to iOS and Android

The Indian authorities are considering creating their own mobile operating system, which would be an alternative to iOS and Android, reports the local Economic Times. The government wants the new OS to become a major Indian brand.

Such plans are followed by the government and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India. The head of the ministry, Rajiv Chandrasekhar, told the publication that only iOS and Android are now widespread in the country, while there is simply no third mobile operating system. Therefore, according to him, the authorities are interested in creating an alternative.

Chandrasekhar noted that the government is looking for new opportunities in startups and academia. In his opinion, there is still enough room in the Indian mobile device market for another operating system to exist. At the same time, it is noted that the Indian authorities may also consider entering the world market if the project is successful.

The country's authorities have not yet talked about the timing of the development of a new operating system, as well as how much will be allocated for the project.

This is not the first such initiative in India - in 2010, the country was already trying to develop an operating system that could compete with the leaders in the global market. Then it was planned to develop an operating system for a PC - it was assumed that it would become a competitor to Windows and macOS and would be focused on use in the country's computer systems, but as a result, the project failed.
