Lesun explains why there are no problems with doping in modern pentathlon

The 2016 Olympic champion in modern pentathlon Alexander Lesun explained why there are no doping scandals in this sport. According to him, this is due to different disciplines, and there is no one-size-fits-all drug that would help improve the results in all.

“In my memory, there were only two cases in men. What a problem here. A person needs to run - and you can eat some kind of pill. But then he needs to switch abruptly and reduce his heart rate from 200 to 140 beats per minute. Then - switch again.

In modern pentathlon there is no universal remedy for drinking and getting results. Moreover, the IOC tells us: "Guys, you have no problems with either refereeing or doping." They don't cling to it, ”Lesun said.

He noted that doping scandals would not affect the growth of popularity of modern pentathlon, which in such a situation could be discussed more. Lesun stressed that the problem with popularity is the lack of quality television broadcasts.

“Over the years, I had to learn how to photograph and show us correctly, but they didn’t. Maybe you need to somehow reformat the show jumping, shorten the pause between the first and second disciplines.

There can be many options. But we do not want to do this, spend money on TV people who would see the picture. Our sport has very good fullness, it needs to be packed in a bright wrapper and I think people will start accepting it, ”the athlete said.

Lesun is a multiple world and European champion. Honored Master of Sports of Russia (2013). In 2016, Lesun was recognized by the Ministry of Sports as the best sportsman in the country (nomination "Pride of Russia").

Modern pentathlon includes fencing, swimming, show jumping, running and shooting.

Earlier, biathlete Timofey Lapshin, representing the South Korean team, pleaded guilty to doping.
