Over 2,000 people detained in Almaty after riots

The information center of the commandant's office of Alma-Ata said that law enforcement officers detained more than two thousand people in the city for participating in illegal actions, looting and other crimes. It is reported by TASS.

“In total, 2,159 participants in illegal actions, looting and other crimes were detained. 67 firearms and 3,112 ammunition were seized,” the publication says.

Earlier, the "orange" level of terrorist threat was introduced in the capital of Kazakhstan, Nur-Sultan, for 14 days.

On January 13, it became known that law enforcement agencies of Kazakhstan had completed an antiterrorist operation in 14 out of 17 regions of the republic.

Protests broke out in Kazakhstan on January 2 in the city of Zhanaozen, Mangistau region, due to an increase in the price of liquefied gas to 120 tenge (about 21 rubles) per liter of liquefied gas. Prior to this, the price of a liter of gas was 60 tenge. Two days later, protesters clashed with the police and military in Almaty and a number of other cities. Clashes also took place in Aktobe, Taraz, Aktau and other settlements. To suppress the riots, the CSTO peacekeeping forces were sent to the republic.
