After three long years the BMW i8 Spyder is finally about to become a reality

It’s been three long years since BMW unveiled the i8 Spyder concept, which is essentially an open top version of the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. Now BMW has announced the company is finally going to put the i8 Spyder into production. CEO Harald Krueger said it will arrive in the “near future.”

New i8 Spyder will run on a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, combined with a synchronous electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, with a total capacity of 362 hp that will allow the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Fuel consumption will be low - 2.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

The new BMW i8 Spyder concept is expected to be shown in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on January 2016, followed by serial prototype. With the launch of the convertible, the standard i8 model may be modified, including the improvement of the transmission to increase the power and distance of travel in electric mode. BMW also plans the i8 hardcore version and environmentally friendly hydrogen model.
