Two-time biathlon relay world champion Dmitry Yaroshenko spoke about the composition of the Russian men's team for the 2022 Olympic Games. He noted that in his view, the favorite among the Russians was replaced due to the illness of Eduard Latypov - at the moment, Yaroshenko believes that Alexander Loginov is the main contender for Olympic medals. At the same time, the famous sportsman noted, Russian athletes will have the most serious competition, and much will depend on the mistakes of their rivals.
“Before Latypov’s positive test for coronavirus, I did not consider Loginov our main contender for Olympic medals. Just my favorite was, first of all, Latypov. I understand very well that not the whole team will be competitive in individual disciplines.
Loginov is now gaining condition. If he had all this at the beginning of the year, one could say that there would be a recession. And now we see that since the last pre-New Year stage, it has been moving upwards. I do not think that he is in optimal shape, there is something to improve in the shooting component. Remember, for example, he started out as a machine gun to shoot. But at the moment he is probably the most balanced athlete.
Daniil Serokhvostov, perhaps, will also fight for high places. This can be said, but we are well aware that there are only three prizes. If you compare with the same Fillon-Maillet, Jacqueline, at least one of the Be brothers, then don’t go to a fortuneteller if they are in good shape. And it’s extremely difficult to say that ours will win medals in individual races, I don’t want to do such populist things. The French are now very strong, we forgot to mention the Swedes. And also Belarusians for a feast for the eyes. If earlier their hit on the podium or in the top ten could be called an accident, now it is a pattern, the athletes are now very well prepared. So I would bet more on team disciplines, where we have a higher probability of winning medals. The question is how wrong the athletes will be and how much ours will shoot cleanly. Everything will depend on the shooting.
If Tsvetkov ran as fast as Loginov, I would bet on him. But I understand that he cannot develop such speed. He can endure, he should be enough for 7.5 km in the relay. But not by 10. We can now say how strong we are, that they will now win all the medals - but with the competition that exists now, it will be very difficult. Believe me, all our rivals will be fully armed. ”, - said Yaroshenko.
The Russian men's team included Alexander Loginov, Eduard Latypov, Karim Khalili, Daniil Serokhvostov and Maxim Tsvetkov, with Anton Babikov as a substitute. For women, Russia will be represented by Kristina Reztsova, Svetlana Mironova, Uliana Nigmatullina, Irina Kazakevich and Valeria Vasnetsova.
