The WHO spoke about the differences in the subspecies of the omicron strain

The World Health Organization (WHO) is studying a new variety of "omicron" - a strain of coronavirus BA.2 as well as other subspecies. This was announced by a WHO representative in an interview with Lenta.ru.

According to the organization, as of January 7, the main omicron subspecies, BA.1, accounted for about 98% of the genetic sequences uploaded to the international GISAID database.

The WHO said that in the BA.2 variety, unlike BA.1 and BA.3, a mutation typical of the strain was not detected - a deletion, that is, the loss of amino acids 69-70 in the S-protein gene.

Earlier, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the Russians will have to go through several difficult weeks due to the new strain of coronavirus "omicron".

In turn, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that to date, 1,682 cases of infection with the Omicron strain have been identified in 42 regions. According to her, among those infected with the new strain in the country, 27.9% completed a full course of vaccination against COVID-19.
