Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) uproots and burns a banyan tree planted by Former President Mohamed Nasheed in 2009 during a visit to the island Thilafushi.
According to the Island Council Secretariat, they were informed of the deed by employees of Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC). They however said that senior officials of MRDC were unable to give a reason for uprooting and burning the banyan tree.
The Island Council Secretariat added that when they went to look for the tree on receiving information, that it had already been burnt and only the charred remains were found in the island’s waste site.
They noted that the tree had become the target of vandals, during political disputes in the island in the past as well.
