Party gatecrashers cause damage worth thousands of pounds after woman leaves her teenage granddaughter to house-sit

A widow battling an aggressive cancer had her house trashed by revellers who gatecrashed her granddaughter's New Year's Eve gathering, reports .

Karen Roberts, 55, let her teenage ganddaughter invite a few 'trusted friends' to spend the night at her home in Stenton Fields, Derbyshire, while she visited family in Bristol.

But she said the night went 'horribly wrong' when an unruly mob travelled hundreds of miles to party at her home.

Photos taken of the wreckage show piles of broken glass and mud and ketchup smeared across the floor. The out-of-control visitors also smashed three televisions and stole a watch and phone.

'This will cost me thousands and thousands of pounds. It is horrendous and it is not the sort of money I have. I have no idea what will happen.'

Mrs Roberts added that she was 'heartbroken' because her new kitchen, which was paid for with money left to her by her late husband, Gary, had been 'destroyed'.

She said her granddaughter had only invited trusted friends and hadn't advertised the party on social media.

She fears the teenager might have had her drink spiked as she does not remember anything about the event.

'She is adamant she did not have a drink but she does not know how they came here,' Mrs Roberts said.

'I have seen train tickets from all over the country, including London and Birmingham, so it is obvious complete strangers have done this.

'She is a brilliant and lovely girl. She does not drink and does not get involved in things like this. I think people have used text messages to spread the word and that is how it has ended up like this.
