The effectiveness of the Russian vaccine "Sputnik V" against the "omicron" strain of coronavirus was higher than that of the Pfizer drug. This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted at the Italian Spallanzani Institute together with scientists from the Russian Gamaleya Center.
The Sputnik V vaccine showed a titer of virus-neutralizing antibodies to the Omicron strain (B.1.1.529) more than twice as high compared to two shots of the Pfizer vaccine (2.1 times higher overall and 2.6 times higher – three months after vaccination),” the report says.
At the same time, scientists note that the Omicron strain was neutralized in the blood of 74.2% of all study participants vaccinated with Sputnik V, while this figure for Pfizer was 56.9%.
“In the sample with the highest 25% RBD-specific IgG antibody values, 100% of those vaccinated with Sputnik V had antibodies that neutralize Omicron, compared with 83.3% of those vaccinated with Pfizer,” the experts add.
The researchers believe that the Russian vaccine is more effective because it generates a wider range of antibodies, as well as due to its heterogeneous scheme and the high degree of imitation of infection by the adenoviral platform.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the level of neutralization of the new strain of coronavirus "omicron" by the Russian vaccine "Sputnik V" is very high.
