An international team of astronomers have discovered the brightest supernova ever recorded. Light from the ASAS-SN-15lhflashis 50 times more powerful than from all the stars of the Milky Way, writes.

Researchers recorded a spark of ASAS-SN-15lh back in June 2015. The star was found by ASAS-SN system - a network of eight telescopes located around the world.

Next observations allowed the team to confirm the existence of ASAS-SN-15lh supernova.

Studies have shown that the supernova is two times brighter than any of the other previously detected, and at the peak of its brightness, it was 50 times more powerful than all the stars of the Milky Way.

This discovery, will allow to prove or refute the theory of how such bright supernovae born. Further work is needed to understand the source of their origin, and to determine the existence of such stars elsewhere.
