Scientists Successfully Connect Individual Neurons Using Lasers

A team of engineers from the University of Alberta has developed a technique for connecting neurons using lasers, Iflscience writes.

Researchers led by Nir Katchinskiy became the first who found a way to link neurons - cells in the nervous system, responsible for the transmission of information between the brain and other body parts.

In their experiments, Katchinskiy group placed two neurons in a special solution that prevents them from sticking together. Then, ultrashort laser pulses were used. Although the outer layer of cells was partially broken, the inside of the protective layer remained intact. As a result, the two cells connected.

Over several experiments, the cells remained viable, and the connection was strong. The biggest advantage of the discovery is that it gives researchers a complete control over the process of cell connections.
