'Passive Wi-Fi' uses 10,000 times less energy

Scientists at the University of Washington have created a system of passive Wi-Fi, which consumes ten thousand times less power than standard systems, Wired reports.

The development will be presented in March at theUSENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation.

According to scientists, the power consumption of the new system is a thousand times lower than that of existing wireless communications platforms as Bluetooth Low Energy and Zigabee. Such performance was achieved through separation of analog and digital parts. The passive Wi-Fi system includes a constant signal transducer and passive elements, which convert the baseband signal into electricity. The operating range of the passive router is approximately 30 meters indoors.

The developers note that the technology can be widely distributed in areas such as the Internet of Things and smart home design.
