Russia - Rospotrebnadzor announced when the peak of the fifth wave of COVID-19 will come

Russia (bbabo.net), - The increase in the incidence of coronavirus in Russia will continue for some time, the peak incidence of coronavirus infection can be expected by mid-February, - said Natalia Pshenichnaya, Deputy Director for Clinical and Analytical Work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.

"The increase in the incidence is still going on in our country. And it will be observed for some more time, since all regions are at different stages of the next epidemic rise. By mid-February, and possibly earlier, the peak will come," Interfax quotes Pshenichnaya.

Earlier, a colleague of Natalia Pshenichnaya, deputy director for science at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology, Alexander Gorelov, explained that the rise in the incidence of respiratory infections usually lasts 30-45 days, after which a period of stabilization begins, and after about two months the number of infected people begins to decrease. The rise in the number of infected with the arrival of the Omicron strain in our country began after the New Year holidays, so under the usual epidemic scenario, a plateau can really be expected in mid-February.

At the same time, according to Pshenichnaya, a sharp rise in the incidence of "omicron" may be accompanied by a sharp decrease - this, in particular, is evidenced by the experience of South Africa and Great Britain, where the wave caused by the new strain has almost disappeared.

The jump in incidence, which is now observed in Russia, is primarily due to the high contagiousness (contagiousness) of the omicron variant. This strain mainly infects the upper respiratory tract, so the infected more actively shed the virus into the external environment.

The expert believes that the course of a coronavirus infection by the type of SARS suggests that the coronavirus has adapted to the human population and "is gradually moving into the category of seasonal infections."

However, the protection measures remain the same. "First of all, it is vaccination and revaccination. Non-specific preventive measures are also relevant - wearing masks, observing social distance and sanitary and hygienic rules, avoiding crowded places," Pshenichnaya concluded.
