The rise in the number of infected with the arrival of the Omicron strain in our country began after the New Year holidays, so under the usual epidemic scenario, a plateau can really be expected in mid-February.
At the same time, according to Pshenichnaya, a sharp rise in the incidence of "omicron" may be accompanied by a sharp decrease - this, in particular, is evidenced by the experience of South Africa and Great Britain, where the wave caused by the new strain has almost disappeared.
The jump in incidence, which is now observed in Russia, is primarily due to the high contagiousness (contagiousness) of the omicron variant. This strain mainly infects the upper respiratory tract, so the infected more actively shed the virus into the external environment.
The expert believes that the course of a coronavirus infection by the type of SARS suggests that the coronavirus has adapted to the human population and "is gradually moving into the category of seasonal infections."
