The University of California will pay $243 million to settle legal claims by more than 200 women who allege they were harassed by former gynecologist James Heeps, CBS reports.

It is specified that the amount of compensation will be distributed among 203 plaintiffs who accused Hips of committing indecent acts while he worked at the university medical center between 1983 and 2018.

The 64-year-old doctor has been charged with 21 counts and faces more than 67 years in prison. Hips pleaded not guilty. It is alleged that the investigation against the doctor was only launched in 2017, although patients have complained about the gynecologist before.

Last year, the court approved a $73 million settlement in a lawsuit filed by more than 5,500 women against Heeps.

Last year, 74-year-old gynecologist George Tindall was tried in Southern California on charges of mass harassment.
