"We don't know yet how the new omicron subspecies of the BA.2 coronavirus strain will behave, as far as severity is concerned, so we have to be careful," she said on the Rossiya-24 TV channel. Vujnovic added that the BA.2 omicron subspecies is practically replacing BA.1.

The day before, the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that there were cases of infection with the BA.2 line of the omicron strain in Moscow, the republics of Mari El and Bashkiria, as well as in the Rostov region.

Recall that the BA.2 mutation was discovered in mid-January by an academic laboratory in Denmark. According to the Danish Serum Institute, the BA.2 subspecies is significantly more contagious than the BA.1 strain, while genetically BA.2 differs from BA.1 more than BA.1 from the first variant "alpha", which does not allow it to be identified as "omicron" using a standard PCR test.
