Herd immunity to COVID-19 has decreased in Russia

The Russian operational headquarters for combating the spread of coronavirus announced a decrease in the level of herd immunity. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“The level of herd immunity [to coronavirus] in Russia dropped from 64.1% to 61.9% over the week. This figure is decreasing due to the loss of immunity by Russians who were initially vaccinated and who recovered more than six months ago, ”the headquarters said.

The epidemiological situation has worsened in ten subjects of the Russian Federation, they added. We are talking about the Amur, Ivanovo, Kemerovo, Novosibirsk regions, the Krasnodar Territory, Bashkiria, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Tatarstan and Chechnya.

At the same time, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that despite the fall in collective immunity to SARS-CoV-2, in five regions its level exceeds 80% - in St. Petersburg (85.8%), Sevastopol (85.2%), Karelia (85.6%), Murmansk region (83.5%), Tuva (80%).

Earlier, Anatoly Altshtein, a virologist and chief employee of the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, said that the passage of the peak incidence of the “omicron” strain of coronavirus in Moscow indicates a movement towards the end of the pandemic.
