Two people died in a plane crash in Kamchatka

An-2 aircraft crashed and burned down in Kamchatka, both pilots died. The plane took off from an unequipped runway, Governor Vladimir Solodov said. The fire started due to fuel spilled on the ground. The crash happened just a kilometer from the runway. A criminal case has been initiated on violation of the safety rules for the operation of air transport. An-2 aircraft belonging to the Kamchatsky Krechet air transportation company crashed near the village of Severnye Koryaki in the Kamchatka Territory. This was announced on his Instagram by the governor of the region Vladimir Solodov.

“The aircraft… was making a technical flight to transport goods. There were two crew members in it, according to preliminary information from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, they died in a plane crash and a fire,” said the head of Kamchatka.

According to him, the rescuers quickly arrived at the crash site and inspected the aircraft. It completely burned down - the fire broke out due to fuel spilled on the ground. It is too early to draw conclusions about the causes of the disaster.

The aircraft was taking off from an unincorporated runway (RWY). The crash happened just 1 km from Severny Koryakov.

The Directorate of the Investigative Committee for Kamchatka opened a criminal case under Article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - violation of traffic safety rules and the operation of air transport.

In the comments, one of the users suggested that the plane could be overloaded. Another commentator stated that "those buckets should have been changed after the first tragedy", but she was objected that the plane belonged to a private company. In addition, the previous plane crash in Kamchatka occurred not with the An-2 "maize" aircraft, but with the An-26 small passenger aircraft. It crashed on July 6, 2021, killing 28 people.

Nevertheless, accidents with An-2 occur regularly - mainly in the Far East and Siberia, where they are used because of their unpretentiousness for passenger and cargo transportation. In February 2020, a corn plant with shift workers fell in Magadan. However, there were no casualties - the fall occurred from a height of 10 meters. Seven people were injured, five had compression fractures of the spine.

An An-2 hard landing at the end of August 2020 occurred in Yakutia. The private jet crashed, killing two people and injuring seven. In June of the same year, the An-2 aircraft made an emergency landing in the Tunkinsky district of Buryatia. The plane, owned by the Phoenix airline, was performing a phytosanitary flight - its task was to pollinate the Siberian cedar from the silkworm that ate it. Both pilots were found alive after a search and rescue operation. One of them had a broken leg.

The "Kukuruznik" will be replaced by the "Baikal"

The An-2 aircraft was produced in the USSR, Poland, and now continues to be produced in the People's Republic of China. The popular name of the biplane was inherited - aircraft of a similar design were used to cultivate corn fields. In total, more than 18 thousand An-2 units were built. The car was exported to 26 countries of the world - it is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the only aircraft in the world that has been produced for more than 70 years.

In the winter of 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the "corn" needs to be changed. “In the end, it is necessary to replace the An-2 — and this is a small-capacity, nine-seat aircraft — with the Baikal aircraft,” the president said.

The aircraft, developed by the Baikal Engineering company under a contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, should replace the "maize", which has been in operation since 1947. “This project [Baikal] will revive transportation on local airlines, solve problems with ensuring transport accessibility, primarily in the Far East,” said Denis Manturov.
