But the marmots of the Moscow Zoo today slept peacefully in the morning of this date of their namesake and will most likely sleep all day. "Our groundhogs - Archie, Nagini and Sarah - traditionally ignored their "official" holiday and did not wake up," the zoo's external communications department said.
And there is a scientific explanation for this: the average temperature in the United States and other countries is higher on this day, and it’s time for the marmots to wake up there, but it’s still early for us.
In addition, representatives of two different types of marmots live on the territory of Russia and the United States. The American groundhog is a forest groundhog, and the Russian groundhog is a steppe groundhog (its second name is a marmot), and ours is characterized by a longer hibernation period - from three to six months, the zoo specifies.
This year, the marmots went into hibernation a little earlier than usual, at the end of September, foreshadowing a snowy and long winter for these people who believe in omens.
“Now we can already say that the rodents were definitely not mistaken about the amount of snow,” the external communication service clarifies. Sarah and Nagini fell asleep first, and Archie was still putting the last order in the aviary, but by the end of September he joined them.
In addition to the weather, the weight of the animals also affects the hibernation time. The fat ones fall asleep earlier, so the marmots need to be well-greasy seeds, corn, fresh vegetables, nuts, etc., including grass, by autumn.
If there is warming in February, they may come out of the hole by the end of the month. But most likely they will sleep until March, experts say.
