The historian of architecture connected the construction of Moscow chords with the Khrushchev thaw

Architectural historian Alexander Zmeul told Moslenta that the idea to build chords in Moscow came about through the exchange of experience with foreign specialists during the Khrushchev thaw.

“At that time, the question was still whether we keep the radial-ring structure of the city, or not? In the master plan of 1971, a witty answer was found: yes, we keep it, but we impose on it a system of four chords that go around the center. This very idea arose back in the 1960s, now it has become fixed,” he said.

According to Zmeul, the chords were a symbiosis of the achievements of the Soviet architectural school, starting with the avant-garde, and Western approaches to the construction of roads. It was impossible to build them in the 70s - the project was implemented only with the advent of modern materials and technologies.

Earlier, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced the final stage of construction of the two largest off-street highways of the North-Eastern and South-Eastern chords.
